Reverse osmosis or an ionic resin would be the ideal way to remove sodium from water, however I don't think there is a chemical that binds or sequesters sodium.

sodium salts are soluable in water, soluability rules say so.

Try adding another salt which will dissolve in the water into positive and negative ions (but not regular table salt). Make sure that the new salt is comprised from ions that will combine with Na+ and Cl- ions to from a non soluble salt (third and forth kind of salt). The non soluble salt will form into a solid and remove the unwanted Na+ and Cl- particles.

just sift solids out of the water and viola!

Not your fault, of course, but that's a silly quiz question. If such a chemical existed, countries with a coast line would use ocean water for drinking and stop worrying about fresh water supplies.

are ways to desalinate water, but they don't involve one single chemical added to the water.at least not a chemical that you can drink.

could distill the water (does adding heat count?). But I think I'll just deal with the extra tiny bit of sodium that my water softener adds.
