This is a hard time for him, and he obviously doesn't want to worry about school right now.
him time, he'll get his schoolwork back together when he's ready

Well put yourself in his shoes. Im sure you would be sad.
you should give him some space for it to settle in and when the time is right be there for him.
im sure the teacher would understand the situation.

This is going to be a really hard time for him, especially if he was close to his cousin.
of the last things on his mind will be school work and your teachers will be sympathetic towards him if there was a death in his family. Don't pressure him into talking to you either, while he may be your best friend, this is clearly a touchy subject for him and he will talk about it when he is ready. If he won't talk you can always give his parents messages to pass on for you. Don't worry about him being angry at you either, it will pass. He is grieving.
this helped! :)
